Art Show, Spoken Word Poetry, Acoustic Performance, Food Drinks Music

ROCKLAND — The Art Loft, 385 Main St., Suite 9, will show works by resident artist Justin Kinney Friday, July 5, starting with a reception at 5 p.m. The nonprofit community art center is on the lobby level of the Thorndike Building.

Kinney, a self-taught painter based in Rockland, is originally from Weehawken, N.J. He is beginning his third summer in Maine and this will be his second annual exhibition with the Art Loft. “This amazing state has done so much for my artistic endeavors. Falling into the lap of the art capital of Maine was a thing of luck.”

Last year, Kinney’s work aimed to capture emotion. This year, his focus is on the journey from living 5 minutes outside of Manhattan NY to coming up to a much more rural environment in Maine. “I would really like to pay homage to the two locations that have impacted my growth as a human being and as an artist.”

With this show, Kinney hopes to bring all forms of art together into one space. Music, Food, Poetry, and Paintings.

Along with the art exhibit, there will be live music performed by Robin Lane. As well as spoken word artists who will perform. Lilah Poole and Valerie Wells’ performances will begin at 6:45 p.m. The event coincides with the city’s First Friday Art Walk.

Maine Moonlight Dinners will cater the event, which runs through 8 p.m.; purchasing selected prints automatically enters the buyer into a raffle to win a free reservation for two at an upcoming Maine Moonlight Dinner.

Body Bliss: Total Body Tune Up® with Melanie Burns and Murielle Corwin with live Cello with Robin Lane

  • East End Community Center, 195 North Street, Portland, ME 04101 (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Yoga Tune Up®, developed and created by internationally renowned Yoga instructor, Jill Miller, is a 'whole body' regenerative fitness system integrating elements of Yoga and body therapy. Using breath and somatic awareness inspired by Ida Rolf's recipe of working down the back and up the front, we will down regulate the nervous system to promote better breathing and awareness of body blind spots. This work will includes the use of massage balls, which is like receiving a deep tissue massage. This is an easy approach to roll out the tension and help identify where things are stagnating in different areas of the body.

This workshop will delve deep into specific body areas including neck and shoulders, back, feet, and hips. Yoga Tune Up® is designed to create flexibility, relieve muscle tension, and build strength from the inside out. The poses, routines and structure of this format are deeply rooted in discovering the biomechanics and physiology of each individual, helping to create lasting structural change. No matter which level or what physical discipline you teach or practice, Yoga Tune Up® can create radical change in your body. You will leave with a deeper connection to your body and with a practice that works for you! You will be serenaded by the deeply resonant and healing power of live cello with Robin Lane.

Performance with Hyperphonix at Jazz in June

Hyperphonix is an electric jazz/funk ensemble located on planet Earth in the mid-coast Maine area. Leaving low-earth orbit at infinite amplitude. With sounds drawn from the deep well of Fusions origins mixed with visions of a  utopian sci-fi future, they create a unique blend that is both  nostalgic and familiar-yet alien and fresh. The bands influences are infinite, yet if hard pressed they say they range from Charles Mingus and Eric Dolphy, to the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Herbie Hancock, Jaco and the Grateful Dead. They seamlessly blend and bend musical styles calling back to jazz's roots while plotting a trajectory towards tomorrow's harmonics.
